Design Process

Our process is structured, collaborative, and tailored to each project.

We work closely with clients, builders, and consultants to deliver well-planned, resolved interior environments that balance aesthetics, functionality, and commercial objectives.

01. Introductory Call

Every project begins with a short introductory call to understand the scope of the project, timeline, and overall objectives. This conversation helps determine whether we are the right fit and how we can support the project.

02. Design Consultation

Following the introductory call, projects move into a paid design consultation, which marks the beginning of the formal design process.

This meeting allows us to review the project in detail and may include discussion of the site, existing drawings, functional requirements, and the overall design direction.

Following the consultation, you will receive:

  • A return brief confirming the project objectives

  • A scope of works outlining the design services required

  • A detailed fee proposal tailored to the project

This process ensures clear alignment between us and our clients before moving into the design stages.

03. Concept Design

Once engaged, the concept stage explores the overall design direction of the project.

This phase typically includes spatial planning, material palettes, lighting concepts, and the broader design narrative for the space. Concept drawings and visual references are used to communicate the design intent and establish the foundation for the project.

04. Design Development

Following concept approval, the design is developed in greater detail. This stage refines the layout, material selections, joinery concepts, lighting, and furniture direction.

Coordination with consultants may also begin during this stage depending on the project requirements. The objective is to resolve the design before moving into documentation.

Lightwell Design is a Sydney-based interior design studio working across boutique residential and commercial projects in Sydney, Newcastle, and the Hunter region.

05. Documentation

Technical drawings and schedules are prepared for tender and construction. These documents clearly communicate the design to builders, contractors, and suppliers.

Documentation may include:

  • Floor plans - including general arrangement, furniture and finishes plans

  • Partition Plans

  • Reflected Ceiling Plans

  • Interior elevations and detail drawings

  • Joinery drawings

  • Door schedules

  • Finishes schedules

  • FF&E and Furniture specifications

06. Design Coordination

During construction, we can remain involved to support the delivery of the project.

This may include responding to builder queries, reviewing shop drawings, and coordinating with consultants to ensure the design intent is maintained.

07. Installation and Handover

The final stage includes defects inspection and resolution coordination, styling where included, and formal project handover.
